It’s that time again! Starting some of my nightshade plants to get a head start.
To start downstairs:
- butterfly weed
- tomatoes
- peppers
- eggplants
- candelabra plants
- dahlias
To start 2-3 weeks before planting time:
- castor bean plants
- melons
- cukes
- marigolds
To plant outside NOW (cool season plants!)
- spinach
- more hairy vetch
- snow peas
To buy at LI Herb Sale:
- herbs – haha Instead of growing from seed, I’m going to buy all herbs this year
Overall list of plants this year:
peppers (gypsy, giant marconi, carmen or toro, all from seed)
tomatoes (buy most plants, try one or two new ones from seed, incl. grape)
eggplants – no more Turkish or African; those were terrible; mostly Black Beauty, Lavendar, one new (BB buy plants, others from seed)
melons (honeydew, ananas all from seed)
cukes (County Fair from seed, one other – buy plant)
pumpkin plants (buy plants) fruits for compost pile
melons/cukes/pumpkins – instead of veg. garden, move to back garden
snow peas/spinach/lettuce (romaine)
Companion plants & Herbs:
basils, thyme, parsley, rosemary
marigolds, calendula
Queen Anne’s lace
borage
buckets of mint & catnip for the flea beetles (Buy from LI sale)
crimson clover? (never bloomed last year)
tansy, although it seems to have survived the winter (is it a perennial?)
cosmos/zinnia/petunia/geranium
Front beds:
Castor bean plant where there was one last year – didn’t get enough sun, but was still beautiful there
Rely on perennials and fill in with annuals that will bloom all summer (gerbera daisies?)
Containers:
–hanging basket, two stack a pots (one for herbs on back porch, one with annuals for front) – not sure yet what to fill. Last year had gorgeous black geranium in hang. basket, but that hanger needs COLOR. Black got lost and was only attractive close up. Stick to bright colors.
–my tree stumps: hmmm, need some bright annuals that can handle lack of water; water is a problem and need to add LOTS of those weird water gel things. Not sure they work.
Veg garden:
do more rows this year; last year’s mess was too hard to navigate
fewer types of vegs; last year too crowded
Back gardens:
Maybe concentrate dahlias in one space, then cucurbits in another with companion plants. Companions will give color & flowering.
Lots of radishes for companion planting!
