This looks like such a mess and gets worse as it grows. But it's part of the plan. Companion planting and everything is a mish mash. It's too confuse the bugs, and it confused me too. Bamboo border in back (with red bark mulch), eggplants, caserta squash (trap plant), peppers, a lonely little petunia in the crazy patch....some tomatoes and soybeans. The white powder is diatamaceous earth, which is tiny fossils that cut bugs into pieces. I used it to kill a few flea beetles and then it washed away. Good stuff, but it can hurt the bees too, so I was careful to only use it on the eggplants before they started flowering.
