Hairy vetch. It's a soft carpet and if it wouldn't die out during summer, I would rip out the lawn and plant hairy vetch. It is wonderful stuff! Also a legume and adds N to the soil. Green manure, but I didn't have the heart to till it in as planned. I planted this in fall, but planted too late and it came up in spring.
